The National League fixture between Barrow and Forest Green Rovers was abandoned in the 14th minute on Saturday after a waterlogged pitch at Barrow-in-Furness was deemed unplayable, despite having passed a pre-match inspection earlier in the afternoon.

Storm Boelo and persistent heavy rain had already prompted a “lengthy” referee’s inspection before kick-off, with Forest Green’s official account reporting at 2:30pm — 30 minutes before the scheduled start — that “the general consensus at the stadium is that the game will go ahead.” It did, but only briefly.

Barrow opened the scoring inside 15 seconds, yet it was immediately apparent the sodden surface could not cope. The ball repeatedly held up in standing puddles, and the match was ultimately halted when a back pass from a Barrow defender stopped dead inside the penalty area, presenting a Forest Green forward with a clear goalscoring opportunity that he failed to convert. The referee abandoned the game shortly afterwards.

Barrow confirmed the decision on their official account, stating: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, the game has been abandoned.” Forest Green posted a video of the incident that triggered the abandonment, describing it as the “deciding factor”, and acknowledged the inconvenience for travelling supporters. “We understand this is very frustrating for the FGR supporters who have travelled to Barrow today,” the club wrote. “We wish you all safe travels back home.”

The journey from Forest Green’s home ground in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire to Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria is approximately four hours, making the abandonment a particularly costly outcome for away fans who had made the trip north.
