Blitzboks survive Fiji defeat to reach Bordeaux quarter-finals and keep World Championship bid alive
South Africa scraped into the SVNS Bordeaux quarter-finals despite losing to Fiji, advancing only after New Zealand beat Argentina. The Blitzboks remain in contention for the HSBC SVNS World Championship title.
South Africa’s World Championship campaign survived a dramatic scare at SVNS Bordeaux, with the Blitzboks advancing to the quarter-finals as a third-place Pool A finisher after New Zealand’s 24-21 victory over Argentina did the job for them on day two.
The Blitzboks had already absorbed a shock defeat to Great Britain on day one — inspired by Scotland’s all-time leading try-scorer Darcy Graham — before recovering with a commanding 26-5 win over Kenya. But a 15-12 loss to Fiji in their final pool match left South Africa watching from the tunnel at Stade Atlantique, their fate entirely in New Zealand’s hands.
Argentina needed to beat the All Blacks Sevens to progress and push South Africa out of the championship race. Los Pumas Sevens gave it everything but fell 21-24, a result that eliminated Argentina from World Championship contention and kept the Blitzboks alive.
“In South Africa rugby is like a religion,” South Africa’s Ricardo Duarttee said in Bordeaux. “Five out of seven tournaments, I think we can really be glad and be proud of what we did in this green and gold jersey. We’re not perfect but I think we gave it our best shot and at times we were the best, and at times there were teams that were just better than us on the day. But I think we are the best team in this division at the moment.”
South Africa will face Fiji again in the quarter-finals, giving them an immediate opportunity for revenge. Great Britain and the USA also advanced to the top-eight knockouts, where they will meet New Zealand and Spain respectively.
Host nation France secured their quarter-final place with a hard-fought 14-7 win over Germany, with Enahemo Artaud scoring twice to lift the Bordeaux crowd. Germany drop into the bottom four on the overall ladder.
“For some of the boys it’s our first time playing a SVNS event in France so we want to embrace it, but at the same time not be overcome by the added pressure,” France’s Luca Mignot said. “We just use it to fuel our energy and we need to focus on the principles, stay all together and play our game.”
With the World Championship title race now narrowing, South Africa enter the knockout rounds as the circuit’s overall leaders — but with little margin for further slip-ups.
