Blitzboks snatch World Championship crown with 14-12 thriller against Fiji in Bordeaux
South Africa claimed the 2026 HSBC SVNS World Championship title in Bordeaux on Saturday, edging Fiji 14-12 in a tense quarter-final that doubled as a title decider, after rivals Argentina and Australia both fell out of contention earlier in the day.
South Africa are the 2026 HSBC SVNS World Championship winners after defeating Fiji 14-12 in a dramatic quarter-final in Bordeaux — a result that simultaneously secured the Blitzboks the season’s top prize.
The path to the title was anything but straightforward. South Africa had nearly failed to reach the quarter-finals at all, and their fate depended on results elsewhere. Argentina, who had entered the season finale ranked second in the standings, were eliminated from World Championship contention after losses to France and New Zealand, dropping them into the fight for ninth place. Third-placed Australia were bundled out of title contention by a quarter-final defeat of their own. With both rivals gone, South Africa knew a win over Fiji would be enough.
Fiji made the Blitzboks work for it. Viwa Naduvalo crossed in just the second minute as Fiji raced into an early two-try lead. The momentum shifted before half-time when Naduvalo was shown a yellow card, and Sebastiaan Jobb touched down in the final play of the first half to keep South Africa in the contest.
Jobb then raced clear for his second try early in the second half, giving the Blitzboks the lead for the first time. South Africa maintained territorial control inside Fiji’s half for much of the remainder but could not add to their tally — nor did they need to. The 14-12 scoreline held, sending them through to the semi-finals and confirming the World Championship title.
The triumph caps a dominant season for South Africa, who won four of the six HSBC SVNS 1 regular-season events and clinched the regular-season title at SVNS New York. They also claimed the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens for the first time and reached the final at SVNS Valladolid the previous weekend.
“In South Africa rugby is like a religion,” South Africa’s Ricardo Duarttee said in Bordeaux. “Five out of seven tournaments, I think we can really be glad and be proud of what we did in this green and gold jersey. We’re not perfect but I think we gave it our best shot and at times we were the best, and at times there were teams that were just better than us on the day. But I think we are the best team in this division at the moment.”
