Blair hails Roigard as one of world rugby's best nines after Nations Championship double
All Blacks assistant coach Mike Blair has praised Cam Roigard as among the finest scrum-halves in world rugby, after the 25-year-old scored three tries in New Zealand's opening two Nations Championship matches against France and Italy.
All Blacks assistant coach Mike Blair has declared Cam Roigard one of the best scrum-halves in world rugby, backing the 25-year-old after a standout start to New Zealand’s Nations Championship campaign that has yielded three tries in two Tests.
Roigard delivered a 75-minute performance and scored twice as the All Blacks opened their new era under head coach Dave Rennie with a 34-32 victory over France at One New Zealand Stadium. He retained his place for the trip to Italy, where New Zealand won by 30 points, adding a third try to his tally.
“Cam’s playing some of the best rugby of nines in world rugby at the moment,” Blair told reporters at North Harbour Stadium. “He’s got a load of confidence but he’s got a couple of guys snapping at his heels as well, who have a brilliant work ethic and great talent as well.”
Roigard is approaching 20 Test caps having stepped into the No. 9 jersey following Aaron Smith’s departure after the 2023 Rugby World Cup. He also arrived in the international window on the back of a Super Rugby Pacific title with the Hurricanes, giving him considerable momentum heading into the season.
Cortez Ratima and Kyle Preston provide scrum-half cover in the squad, and Blair was complimentary about all three options. “They’re three cracking players, aren’t they? And we’ve got other guys waiting in the wings to come in as well. I’m really enjoying working with them. I think there’s raw talent with all three of them.”
Roigard’s halves partner Ruben Love has also drawn praise from Blair after starting both Tests at first five-eighth — the first time the young playmaker has worn the No. 10 jersey at Test level. Love received a yellow card for a high tackle against France but recovered to put in a strong showing, and Blair was quick to highlight his composure.
“Been really pleased with Ruben. It’s difficult coming in as a 10 and leading the team as a young player but he’s done that on the back of a brilliant season with Hurricanes,” Blair said. “He hasn’t skipped a beat all week.”
Test veteran Beauden Barrett has yet to feature this international season, with fullback Damian McKenzie covering the first five-eighth role from the bench. Blair acknowledged Barrett’s continued contribution in training while signalling the importance of giving Love time to establish himself at the top level.
