Leicester begin PREM Rugby Cup defence away at Harlequins after record-breaking final win
Reigning champions Leicester Tigers open their PREM Rugby Cup defence at Harlequins' Twickenham Stoop on Saturday, 5 September. The Tigers claimed the trophy in March by thrashing Exeter 66-14 and are chasing a first successful retention since the competition launched in 2019.
Leicester Tigers will begin their PREM Rugby Cup defence on the road, travelling to Harlequins’ Twickenham Stoop on Saturday, 5 September, as they bid to become the first side to retain the trophy since the competition’s 2019 inception.
The Tigers secured the Cup in March with a commanding 66-14 demolition of Exeter at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, making them the seventh different holder of the trophy. The run gave head coach Geoff Parling silverware in his first season in charge and served as a platform for several younger and fringe players to push for regular Premiership involvement.
Four players featured in all 10 of Leicester’s Cup matches across the campaign. Among them were loose forward Harry Palmer and prop Ale Loman, who both made their PREM Rugby first-team debuts during the same run.
The competition follows the same pool format as previous editions. Pool A comprises Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Gloucester and Sale Sharks, while Pool B features Harlequins, Leicester, Newcastle, Northampton and Saracens. Exeter and Newcastle sit out the opening weekend and enter the competition in Round 2 — Exeter at home to Bristol, Newcastle away to Leicester.
Round One fixtures are scheduled for 5-6 September. In Pool A, Bristol host Gloucester on Saturday at 3pm, while Sale face Bath on Sunday at the same time. Pool B opens with Saracens against Northampton and Harlequins against Leicester, both on Saturday at 3pm.
After two rounds in September, the remaining pool matches will be split across the November international window and a January/February block, maintaining the rhythm established in previous seasons.
Harlequins’ home fixture against Northampton has been confirmed as the televised Round Two match.
