Black Ferns lock Maia Roos signs two-year extension ahead of Lions Tour
Maiakawanakaulani Roos has committed to New Zealand Rugby for a further two years, securing her place with the Black Ferns and NIB Blues as the historic British and Irish Lions Tour approaches.
Maiakawanakaulani Roos has signed a two-year contract extension with New Zealand Rugby, keeping the veteran Black Ferns lock tied to the national programme and the NIB Blues ahead of the British and Irish Lions Tour on Kiwi soil.
The 41-Test lock has been a consistent presence for the Black Ferns since her debut in 2021, scoring three international tries across her career. Her extension also secures her future with the Blues, the club she has been part of since its inception.
“Representing the Black Ferns and the Blues is something I never take for granted, so I’m incredibly grateful to continue my journey with both teams for the next three years,” Roos said. “I’ve truly grown up in these environments. They’ve played a huge role in shaping me as a person, player and leader. I’m excited to continue learning, evolving and serving the teams that have given so much to me.”
Black Ferns head coach Whitney Hansen highlighted Roos’ leadership as a key factor in her value to the squad. “Maia is someone who consistently puts the team first and leads from the front through her actions. She has stamped her mark as a prominent figure within the Black Ferns Tight 5, through consistent dominant performances.”
Hansen added that Roos’ influence extends well beyond her on-field contributions. “She has achieved a lot at a young age, and I’m excited about what’s ahead for her — she has the qualities to become a Black Fern whose influence reaches far beyond the field, with the ability to connect and uplift her community.”
Blues head coach Willie Walker described the renewal as a significant moment for the club’s development. “Maia has been with us from the start, so to have that stability — with her desire to stay with the Blues and keep growing alongside us — is pretty special. She’s made a huge contribution to how our programme has grown.”
NZR CEO Steve Lancaster framed the signing as a reflection of the growing strength of the women’s international calendar. “Maia’s durability and consistency is testament to her dedication and work ethic. It’s great to see our women’s players making long-term commitments to the game as we look forward to an exciting international calendar over the next three years.”
