Bisping raises doubts over Pereira's sparring ahead of Gane heavyweight title fight
Michael Bisping has expressed concern after watching Alex Pereira spar with UFC heavyweight Tallison Teixeira, warning that Pereira showed low output and was clipped by his partner — a worrying sign ahead of his interim heavyweight title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC White House on June 14.
Michael Bisping has questioned Alex Pereira’s readiness for the heavyweight division after analysing sparring footage of the light heavyweight champion ahead of his interim title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC White House on June 14.
Pereira recently posted a sparring session with UFC heavyweight Tallison Teixeira online. Bisping, a former UFC middleweight champion, was unimpressed by what he saw — noting that Pereira produced limited output and was caught by a right hand from Teixeira during the exchange. While Bisping acknowledged Teixeira as a capable fighter with his own upcoming bout on the horizon, he argued that Pereira should be dominating a sparring partner who is not at Gane’s level.
“Tallison Teixeira is a good fighter; he’s got a big fight coming up… But for Alex Pereira going up against Ciryl Gane, you would think that he would be having his way,” Bisping said. “We see here, he’s backing him up against the fence, he’s about to go on the attack, nice 1-2, but Tallison fires back with some heavy firepower, cracks him with the right hand. And you know that Ciryl Gane is going to have the speed advantage. He’s also going to be lighter on the feet.”
The stakes for Pereira could hardly be higher. Having begun his MMA career at middleweight, the Brazilian won the 185-pound title before moving up to light heavyweight, where he became champion and defended the belt three times. He lost the title to Magomed Ankalaev, then reclaimed it by knocking Ankalaev out in 80 seconds at UFC 320. A win over Gane would make Pereira the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in three separate weight classes.
However, the move to heavyweight has drawn scrutiny beyond just the sparring footage. Observers have noted that Pereira, while visibly bulking up, does not carry the same shredded conditioning he has shown in previous camps — a concern given that Gane is widely regarded as one of the most technically refined and fleet-footed fighters in the division.
Bisping’s central worry is speed. Gane’s ability to move fluidly and strike at range has troubled heavier, slower opponents throughout his career, and Bisping believes that gap will be even more pronounced against a fighter making such a significant jump in weight class. Whether Pereira’s power and championship experience can compensate remains the defining question heading into the June 14 bout.
