Bellingham's back-heel rescues Real Madrid in stoppage-time Champions League comeback
Jude Bellingham scored a brilliant back-heeled goal and was named player of the match as Real Madrid twice came from behind to beat AEK Athens 3-2 in the Champions League, with Federico Valverde sealing the win in stoppage time.
Jude Bellingham scored a stunning back-heeled finish and Federico Valverde struck a stoppage-time winner as Real Madrid fought back twice to defeat AEK Athens 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Jose Mourinho declaring the England midfielder unlike any other player in world football.
Bellingham opened his account in the 32nd minute, connecting with Marc Cucurella’s cross and flicking a first-time shot past goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli. Madrid had to do it the hard way, falling behind on two occasions before Valverde’s late strike completed the comeback.
“It was just instinct really,” Bellingham said of his goal. “I found myself in a good position and managed to do the only thing that came naturally in that position. It was a nice one.”
The performance also marked a personal milestone for the 23-year-old, who became the youngest player in history to make 60 appearances in European club football’s top competition. He had previously held the record for youngest to reach 50 appearances, and surpassed the benchmark set by Real Madrid and Spain legend Iker Casillas, reaching the landmark at just 23 years and 128 days old.
Mourinho was effusive in his praise after the final whistle, describing Bellingham as a player without peer at his position.
“He is a unique player. Today, there is no midfielder in world football like Jude, who is complete on all levels,” Mourinho said via translation. “I don’t have many words because, for me, he is an absolutely extraordinary player. Even on a day when he doesn’t have a great match, one of those jaw-dropping performances, he still brings work, leadership, ambition, quality, and goal-scoring ability. He is an extraordinary player.”
The result keeps Madrid in contention in the Champions League group stage, with the comeback victory underlining the squad’s resilience and Bellingham’s growing status as one of the competition’s defining players.
