Como equal Champions League record with nine-goal rout as Real Madrid snatch late win in Athens
Como thrashed Lens 9-1 to equal the record for most goals in a single Champions League game, with Anastasios Douvikas netting a hat-trick. Real Madrid survived a scare in Greece, with Federico Valverde's stoppage-time winner sealing a 3-2 victory over AEK Athens.
Como equalled the record for the most goals scored in a single Champions League game on Wednesday, demolishing Lens 9-1 in France to announce themselves as a genuine force in their debut season in European football’s top tier.
Anastasios Douvikas led the way with a hat-trick, while Nico Paz continued his impressive form with a goal and two assists. Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli also got on the scoresheet in a breathtaking display orchestrated by manager Cesc Fabregas. The Serie A side have now won three of their four matches in their maiden Champions League campaign.
Real Madrid maintained their perfect record in the competition, but only just. Federico Valverde struck in the second minute of added time to complete a 3-2 comeback win over AEK Athens. The hosts had twice led — through Aboubakary Koita in the 12th minute and Stavros Pilios with 15 minutes remaining — but Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe both equalised before Valverde’s captain’s intervention broke Athenian hearts.
Arsenal moved up to third in the standings with a 2-1 win over Slavia Prague in Czechia. Viktor Gyokeres, given a rare start, scored and set up Noni Madueke’s opener as the Gunners ground out the three points.
Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the campaign, losing 3-2 at Fenerbahce. Vedat Muriqi scored the winner for the Turkish side in the 79th minute after Liverpool had twice taken the lead.
Erling Haaland struck late to help Manchester City edge RB Leipzig 3-2 in another high-scoring encounter. Napoli, despite Scott McTominay finding the net, were beaten 4-1 by Porto — a remarkable turnaround for the Portuguese side, who had lost their opening three group games.
Elsewhere, Club Brugge climbed to ninth with a 2-1 win at PSV, Konstantinos Karetsas netted a 72nd-minute winner as Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2-1, and Viking secured their first victory of the campaign with a 4-1 win over 10-man Sabah, Erik Botheim scoring twice.
