Bellingham, Rice and two defenders on yellow-card tightrope for England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway
Four key England players — Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly — face suspension for the semi-final if booked against Norway on Saturday, with Jarell Quansah already absent after his red card against Mexico.
Four England players will enter Saturday’s World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Norway one yellow card away from a semi-final ban, adding a significant selection headache for manager Thomas Tuchel as the Three Lions bid to reach the last four.
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly are all carrying a booking from earlier in the knockout rounds. Under FIFA’s rules for this tournament, yellow cards are wiped after the quarter-finals — meaning a caution in the semi-final would not carry over to the final — but any player booked twice before that stage faces a one-match ban.
Bellingham picked up his first caution for a reckless tackle against DR Congo in the last 32, a match England won 2-1 thanks to Harry Kane’s late double. Rice was booked just 50 seconds into the last-16 clash with co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca, while Guehi was cautioned for protesting the award of a second-half penalty — a booking incorrectly attributed to Kane in a BBC graphic during the broadcast. O’Reilly received his yellow card moments later for an off-the-ball clash with Mexico defender Jorge Sanchez.
England eventually won that match 3-2, with two quickfire Bellingham goals and a Kane penalty doing the damage before a backs-to-the-wall defensive effort after Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half. Quansah is suspended for the Norway game, though the FA are reported to be considering an appeal.
Midfielder Jordan Henderson was also cautioned against Mexico — for interfering with play as an unused substitute — but will miss the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a freak arm injury during the post-match celebrations.
All four players at risk of suspension started both knockout matches, making Tuchel’s task particularly delicate. Bellingham has been England’s standout performer, scoring four goals and assisting Kane’s opener against Panama, and his absence for a potential semi-final in Atlanta would be a significant blow.
In practice, Tuchel is unlikely to rest any of the four with a quarter-final place at stake. If England lose to Norway, the suspension question becomes irrelevant; if they win, the manager will need to weigh the risk of further bookings against fielding his strongest available side.
