Bellingham fires 'whatever' at Tuchel after brace sends England into World Cup semi-finals
Jude Bellingham scored twice, including an extra-time winner, as England beat Norway 2-1 in Miami to reach the World Cup semi-finals — but his dismissive response to Thomas Tuchel's public criticism of the team's performance sparked immediate tension.
Jude Bellingham delivered a pointed one-word response to Thomas Tuchel’s public criticism of England’s display, saying “whatever” after his two goals — including an extra-time winner — secured a 2-1 victory over Norway at Miami Stadium and a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
Tuchel made no attempt to hide his frustration after the final whistle, telling ITV: “We made life very difficult for ourselves today. The result is fantastic, we’re in the last four, it’s amazing, but no, I’m not happy with the performance. Sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough, not repetitive enough. We were lucky today.”
The Germany-born manager was particularly irked by a VAR intervention that overturned what would have been a 2-1 Norway lead in the second half, and he insisted the issues were technical rather than motivational. “It’s not mentality,” he said. “The quality of our game. It’s nothing to do with mentality. We will get better. We need to get better.”
When asked directly about Bellingham, however, Tuchel was effusive, calling him “world class” and adding: “Enough said. He does it every single match.”
Bellingham, who now has six goals in the tournament, offered a starkly different reading of the evening. “Character, perseverance, even when things weren’t working — we found the way to win the game again,” he said. “Whether it’s in 90, 120, we’ll give everything we’ve got. You saw that there. So proud of this team once again.”
When the interviewer put Tuchel’s dissatisfaction to him directly, Bellingham’s reply was blunt. “Yeah, well, whatever. Whatever. It’s difficult out there. It’s a tough shift. All the players have put in a very tough shift. My thoughts and appreciation goes to the players who have put in a tough shift once again.”
The exchange raised immediate questions about the dynamic between England’s manager and his most influential player, particularly given the contrast in tone after a result that sends the Three Lions into the final four of a World Cup.
Harry Kane sought to bridge the gap between the two positions, explaining that Tuchel had congratulated the squad in the dressing room while also making clear he believed more was possible. “Which in a way is a good thing,” Kane said, “because we’re in the semi-final of a World Cup knowing we can still improve, still find another level.”
England’s path to the semi-finals included a first-half equaliser from Bellingham after Norway — led by Erling Haaland — had taken the lead, before the Real Madrid midfielder struck again in extra time to settle the tie.
