The BBC is bracing for a potential wave of pundit departures from Match of the Day, with reports of internal clashes and growing competition from rival platforms threatening to reshape the corporation’s flagship football show ahead of the new Premier League season.

According to The Sun, a number of pundits have been weighing up whether to leave for Gary Lineker’s new Netflix show after Alan Shearer and Micah Richards split their time between the two outlets during the World Cup.

Lineker’s 25-year tenure as the programme’s presenter came to an end last year, with Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan now sharing hosting duties. His departure gathered further momentum in May 2025 when he walked away from the BBC’s planned World Cup coverage following backlash over a social media post. He has since agreed a deal with Netflix to cover the next two Premier League seasons.

“I’ve got a bit more time, I’m not treading on quite so many eggshells these days, I’m allowed an opinion on things,” Lineker told the Press Association ahead of the World Cup. “I had a wonderful period at the Beeb, and I’ve covered so many major tournaments — obviously I was going to do this originally, but now I’m doing something different, which is really exciting.”

The reports also point to a deal signed between Gary Neville and Disney+ for The Overlap’s podcast content as another potential destination for pundits seeking alternatives to the BBC.

Not all the news points toward departures. Former Tottenham and Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld, who retired from playing in 2025, is reportedly being lined up to join the Match of the Day punditry roster.

Presenter Kelly Cates, speaking at the end of last season, struck a measured tone about the show’s identity and its resilience to personnel changes. “Match of the Day is bigger than the presenters,” she said. “Viewers really watch for the football. They’re not watching for anything else.”
