Bayindir yet to play for Celta Vigo as Man United face loan penalty clause
Manchester United loanee Altay Bayindir has failed to make a single competitive appearance for Celta Vigo, with reports in Spain suggesting the La Liga club face a financial penalty if the Turkish goalkeeper does not receive sufficient playing time.
Manchester United loanee Altay Bayindir has not featured in a single competitive match for Celta Vigo since joining the La Liga club on a season-long loan, and reports in Spain indicate the arrangement carries a financial sting for the Galician side if that situation persists.
According to La Voz de Galicia, a clause was inserted into the loan agreement to protect Bayindir’s development and give him a genuine opportunity to play. Should Celta fail to meet a minimum playing-time threshold, they would be required to pay more than the originally agreed loan fee — effectively a penalty for keeping the goalkeeper on the bench.
The 27-year-old has been unable to displace Romanian shot-stopper Ionut Radu, who has established himself as the undisputed first choice in both La Liga and the Europa League. Radu has started all three of Celta’s European outings this season, with the suggestion that Bayindir could be used in continental fixtures to reduce the club’s financial liability yet to materialise.
Celta head coach Claudio Giraldez was asked about the lack of impact from the club’s summer arrivals and offered a pointed response when Bayindir’s name came up. “Each player has their own circumstances,” Giraldez said. “Altay’s situation is not the same as Sebas’s. They are different situations. We all want them to arrive and perform, but we have to be patient. Everyone is working hard; I don’t see anyone ignoring the issue.”
The loan was agreed with an option to make the transfer permanent. Should Celta trigger that clause, Bayindir could cost them in the region of £3.5 million, with a high sell-on percentage also included in the terms. Given his current standing at the club, that outcome appears increasingly unlikely.
At Old Trafford, Bayindir had already found first-team opportunities hard to come by. He made six appearances for United last season and 17 in total across his time at the club, but the arrival of Senne Lammens from Belgium further complicated his path back into the squad under former head coach Ruben Amorim. The loan to Celta was intended to reignite his career with regular football; so far, it has delivered neither.
