Bayern's €250m release clause ends Liverpool's pursuit of Michael Olise

Bayern Munich are preparing to tie Michael Olise to a new contract that would include a release clause of between €150 million and €250 million (£126m–£211m), according to journalist Christian Falk — a figure that places the winger firmly beyond Liverpool’s reach.

The reported extension marks a significant shift in Bayern’s contractual philosophy. The Bavarian club have historically refused to insert buyout clauses in player agreements, preferring to retain full control over departures. That stance has softened in recent years, however, with a similar clause understood to have been included in Jamal Musiala’s latest deal.

Olise, 23, joined Bayern from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2024 and has since established himself as one of the most dangerous wide attackers in European football. His rise began in the Championship with Reading before a move to Selhurst Park brought him to the attention of the continent’s elite clubs, Liverpool among them.

The Merseyside club had reportedly been monitoring Olise through their recruitment department, but the scale of the proposed release clause makes a transfer unworkable under Fenway Sports Group’s financial model. Liverpool have already committed significant funds to recent arrivals — the source citing Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Bradley Barcola, each costing in excess of £100 million — leaving little appetite to shatter their transfer record on a single target.

The arrival of Barcola, a direct stylistic comparison to Olise, also reduces the sporting urgency of the pursuit. With a left-sided attacker of that profile now in the squad, the need to trigger a world-record fee for a player in the same mould is difficult to justify.

For Liverpool, the focus will now shift to identifying value elsewhere in the market. For Bayern, securing Olise on a long-term deal with a prohibitive exit clause sends a clear message that they have no intention of losing him to the Premier League any time soon.
