Bayern confirm Kompany making progress weeks after training ground collapse
Assistant manager Aaron Danks visited Vincent Kompany in hospital and confirmed the Bayern Munich head coach is improving daily, though no return date has been set following his collapse during a reserve-team training session last Friday.
Vincent Kompany is recovering steadily after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground last Friday, but the club’s assistant manager Aaron Danks confirmed on Tuesday that no timeline has been set for the 40-year-old’s return to work.
The Belgian coach was hospitalised after collapsing during a reserve-team session, having already missed several days of training while battling a virus. Bayern have indicated he is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.
“I paid him a short visit yesterday,” Danks said ahead of Wednesday’s German Cup second-round tie against Magdeburg. “He is in good spirits. It looks like every day he is getting better. There are no major updates in terms of diagnosis or return to work. Let him rest, let him take his time.”
Danks revealed that conversations with Kompany have been deliberately kept light. “We had some good conversations but kept it away from football and specific tactics,” he said. “It was just a friendly chat and nice to see him and catch up.”
The health scare has coincided with a demanding run of fixtures for the Bundesliga leaders. Bayern face Magdeburg on Wednesday before the high-stakes Bundesliga Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, followed by a Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid — all without their head coach on the touchline.
Danks acknowledged the emotional turbulence of the past week, which also included Harry Kane claiming the Ballon d’Or on Monday — making the Bayern striker the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001, ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Ousmane Dembélé.
“Full extremes of life in the last week,” Danks said. “Joys and highs for Harry and the lows of the last days. To get through these moments we had to rely on our chemistry, our team spirit and that definitely helped us.”
