Martin Baturina gave Como its first goal in Champions League history in the 15th minute of a league phase match played at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium against RB Leipzig. The Croatian midfielder doubled the lead by setting up Anastasios Douvikas, making it 2-0.

Promoted to Serie A last season and fourth in the Italian championship in 2023-2024, Como had secured its first-ever ticket to the Champions League — directly to the league phase. The club managed by Cesc Fàbregas faced a reputed German opponent on Thursday, though the prospect did not seem to weigh on its players.

The opening goal came from a poor clearance by Leipzig’s defence. Baturina recovered the ball, eliminated two opponents with a sharp turn and struck powerfully from the penalty spot. Unstoppable for the German goalkeeper, the goal triggered euphoria in the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stands.

About twenty minutes later, Baturina confirmed his grip on the match by setting up Douvikas for the 2-0, thus recording a double decisive contribution in this inaugural evening in the Champions League.

Como will also face Paris Saint-Germain during this league phase, a fixture that promises to be another unprecedented encounter for the Lombard club in Europe’s premier club competition.
