Lyon will pocket €4.9 million from Bradley Barcola’s transfer from PSG to Liverpool, officially confirmed today for €140 million. Under FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, which returns 3.5% of the total amount to the training club, Lyon recovers this sum as the first club of the French international winger.

The news comes at the worst possible time for the Rhône-based club, eliminated Wednesday from the Champions League by Fenerbahçe in the playoff return leg (1-2 home defeat, after a 1-1 draw away). For a club still heavily in debt, this elimination represents an estimated loss of between €30 and €50 million. Relegated to the Europa League, Lyon will struggle to offset this deficit over the entire season, and further sacrifices on the transfer market are to be feared.

The €4.9 million from the Barcola deal therefore represents a limited but real lifeline. It is not the first time the solidarity mechanism has benefited the Lyonnais: in early August, Bruno Guimarães’ transfer from Newcastle to Arsenal had already brought them nearly €7.5 million under the same mechanism.

As a reminder, Bradley Barcola had left Lyon in summer 2023 for €50 million — bonuses included — without a clause on any future resale profit. It is therefore solely through FIFA solidarity, and not through a resale clause, that Lyon indirectly benefits from the surge in his market value.
