Henry Hutchison has committed to Australia Sevens through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, signing a new contract that extends the career of the program’s most-capped men’s player — 68 events and more than 350 games — as the squad prepares to open its SVNS Series campaign at the Sydney quadruple-header on Saturday against Fiji.

The 29-year-old skipper arrives at the new season carrying the sting of Paris, where Australia lost the bronze medal match 26-19 to South Africa and left the Olympics without a podium finish. That result, Hutchison acknowledged, has sharpened his appetite considerably.

“I would probably have the most silver medals on the circuit, which is not a claim,” Hutchison told reporters with a wry smile. “It’s a terrible stat to have.”

The captain’s ambitions extend beyond results alone. He wants Australia to carry a presence that opponents actively want to avoid — a shift in reputation he believes is already under way after promising performances in Dubai, Perth and Valladolid last season.

“I want the team to walk around the dining hall and be feared and respected and wanted to be avoided,” Hutchison said. “They don’t want to play Australia. I’d be lying to say that’s always been the case for us, but I do feel like we’re changing that narrative.”

He was equally candid about the longer horizon. “Gold in LA is huge, and that’s the goal, but that’s a lot of work, and a lot has to be done before then. Along the way, we need to be respected, and that comes from being physical and from performing consistently as a group.”

Hutchison used the offseason to broaden his perspective, competing in India’s Rugby Premier League and the Ultimate Sevens tournament in Europe before returning to the Australian camp. Playing alongside and against SVNS rivals in unfamiliar environments gave him fresh insight into how to develop the program at home.

“It’s going to be the way of the future for sevens,” he said of the emerging independent competitions. “These rebel leagues are going to start really supplementing the World Series, which is great. It offers a whole new challenge, a whole new different perspective.”

With the squad also set to feature in Friday’s Kick On 7s event ahead of the Sydney fixture, Hutchison and Australia will have an early opportunity to begin building the identity their captain has spent the offseason envisioning.
