Just one pass exchanged: Mbappé-Olise disconnect sinks France against Spain
Beaten 2-0 by Spain in the 2026 World Cup semi-final in Dallas, France collapsed offensively. A damning statistic: Mbappé and Olise exchanged just one pass in 72 minutes, compared to 66 over the previous six matches.
France is eliminated from the 2026 World Cup. Favorites for the title, Didier Deschamps’ side fell 2-0 to Spain in the semi-final on Tuesday evening in Dallas, in a performance that betrayed all expectations placed upon them.
The statistic alone sums up the scale of the offensive disappointment: according to statistician Opta, Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise exchanged just one pass during the 72 minutes they spent together on the pitch. Over the previous six matches of the tournament, the same duo had accumulated 66. Olise, substituted in the second half by Deschamps, had embodied one of the most exciting partnerships of the World Cup alongside the French captain.
Beyond this duo, it was the entire attacking quartet — Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Olise and Bradley Barcola — that completely misfired. Incapable of combining or creating any danger through their individual talent, the four French attackers were harmless against a Spain that imposed its tempo without ever wavering.
Speaking to the microphone after the match, Mbappé made no excuses. “Spain respected its plan, which is what it is faithful to: a team that likes to have control of the ball, that likes to control the tempo of the match. Our objective was to come and press them high so as not to establish this false rhythm, because in controlling the game, they are better than us. And we failed to do that,” he said.
The French captain also pointed to his team’s technical shortcomings from the start: “The first passes, the first touches were not worthy of a World Cup semi-final. If we’re objective, we didn’t put all the ingredients in place to reach the final today.”
France, which said it was “on a mission” to claim a third star, leaves the tournament after a lesson in collective mastery inflicted by the Roja. The quest for the title will have to wait.
