Real Madrid has not waited for José Mourinho’s first results to plan ahead. According to journalist Jorge Picon, president Florentino Perez is closely monitoring two Spanish managers who could one day take the reins of the Casa Blanca: Mikel Arteta and Cesc Fabregas.

It is Arteta’s profile that generates the most interest internally. At 44, the Arsenal manager won the Premier League title with the Gunners — ending a long drought — while guiding them to the Ligue des Champions final. A trajectory that has not escaped the attention of Madrid’s leadership.

The inclusion of Cesc Fabregas on this shortlist is more surprising. His past as a player at FC Barcelona could have been a major obstacle, but the former international midfielder has apparently convinced Florentino Perez since taking charge of Como. His attacking philosophy and ability to develop young players have been enough to earn him a place on the Madrid president’s restricted list.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has just resumed his duties with a clear mission: to make all the stars of the squad coexist and end two seasons without a trophy. Long-term planning by Florentino Perez is nothing new at Real Madrid, where succession management is part of the club’s institutional culture.
