Arsenal vs Chelsea: Eight players in doubt for Premier League Emirates showdown

Arsenal and Chelsea both face significant injury concerns ahead of their Premier League meeting at Emirates Stadium on Sunday, with as many as eight players across the two squads potentially unavailable.

Mikel Arteta confirmed that final training on Saturday will determine his matchday squad after the Gunners picked up several knocks during their 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Monday. Bruno Guimaraes, Cristhian Mosquera, and Declan Rice all left that match with concerns, though Rice returned to training on Thursday and was not mentioned by Arteta in his Friday press conference.

Guimaraes came on as a substitute at Villa Park but his involvement against Chelsea remains uncertain. “He had a knock against Villa,” Arteta said. “He’s being assessed, but probably tomorrow he’ll be OK for training.” Mosquera was substituted off clutching his thigh, with Arteta describing it as “more precaution than anything else” before adding that Saturday’s session would clarify his availability.

Jurrien Timber offers Arteta a potential boost, having returned to full training with the squad. “He’s in really good condition at the moment,” the Arsenal manager said. “He’s been on the pitch for a few weeks and he’s training with us now. We’ll decide tomorrow after training.”

William Saliba faces a longer absence, however. Arteta acknowledged the timeline remains unclear: “We don’t really know the number of weeks Wilo is going to be out because it’s about a healing process. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reacts when we start to put some load into it.”

For Chelsea, Xabi Alonso is monitoring the fitness of Moises Caicedo ahead of the trip to north London. “We will check tomorrow, as tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. Marco Palestra is also listed as an absentee for the visitors.

Both clubs arrive at the fixture having won their opening two Premier League games, making Sunday’s contest one of the most anticipated early-season clashes in the division.
