Arsenal spend £201.5m on five signings as nine players exit in summer overhaul

Arsenal have reshaped their squad significantly this summer, bringing in five players for a combined £201.5m and offloading nine senior figures as the Premier League champions look to defend their title. A tenth departure — Gabriel Martinelli’s £55.7m switch to Al-Hilal — is expected to follow once the Saudi Arabian Football Federation’s domestic deadline of 6 September passes.

The five arrivals

Defender Piero Hincapie was the first piece of business, with his loan from Bayer Leverkusen made permanent in June for £37.5m after he started 20 Premier League games in Arsenal’s title-winning campaign. Goalkeeper Illan Meslier followed on a free transfer after his contract with Leeds United expired.

Christos Tzolis arrived from Club Brugge for £34m and made an immediate impression, contributing two assists in Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City before starting the opening Premier League victories against Coventry City and Aston Villa.

The summer’s marquee signing was Bruno Guimaraes, who joined from Newcastle United for £75m and has added a new dimension to Mikel Arteta’s midfield. Ezri Konsa completed the quintet, making a £55m move from Aston Villa in August and marking his debut against his former club.

The nine confirmed departures

Arsenal recouped approximately £60.9m from sales. Goalkeeper Karl Hein was the first to leave, joining Werder Bremen for £2.5m, followed by Leandro Trossard, who moved to Besiktas for £17m. Jakub Kiwior headed to Porto for £14.7m, with further exits also confirmed during the window.

Martinelli deal still to close

The one piece of unfinished business is Martinelli’s move to Al-Hilal. Once completed, the Brazilian will become Arsenal’s most expensive outgoing transfer ever. FIFA’s official transfer calendar lists the window as open until 12 October, giving both clubs ample time to finalise the paperwork.

Arsenal’s summer also featured a high-profile failed pursuit of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and an unsuccessful attempt to sign Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, though neither deal materialised. With the English window now closed, Arteta’s squad is largely set for the season ahead.
