Arsenal began their summer rebuild in earnest on Wednesday, July 1, as eight academy players left the Emirates upon contract expiry, while the club simultaneously confirmed a £34.5 million permanent signing and revealed six more deals are in progress.

Sam Chapman, Harrison Dudziak, Seb Ferdinand, Cam’ron Ismail, Will Lannin-Sweet, Josh Nichols, Samuel Onyekachukwu and Alexei Rojas-Fedorushchenko all departed when their contracts ran out. Chapman and Nichols had already secured their next moves — to the United States and Croatia respectively — while the futures of the remaining six are yet to be confirmed. Several of those released had only signed their first professional contracts with the club within the past two years.

Beyond the academy exits, first-team defender Jakub Kiwior has joined Porto permanently following a loan spell last season, and goalkeeper Karl Hein has completed a similar move to Werder Bremen.

The one arrival Arsenal have confirmed so far this summer is Ecuadorian left-back Piero Hincapie, signed for £34.5 million from Bayer Leverkusen after impressing during a loan stint at the Emirates last term. The fee represents a significant commitment from a club that has not defended a Premier League title in over two decades — a challenge manager Mikel Arteta is now preparing to face for the first time in his managerial career.

Arteta, who was not part of Arsenal’s last title-winning squad as a player either, has spoken previously about the need to be ruthless in the transfer market to remain competitive at the top of English football. Director Andrea Berta and head of scouting Maurizio Micheli are reportedly working on six additional signings as the club looks to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
