Arsenal reassess £130m Bruno Guimarães pursuit as Newcastle demand full fee upfront

Arsenal have cooled their interest in Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães after discovering the midfielder could cost upwards of £130m, far more than the £50m figure intermediaries had initially suggested. Separately, Atlético Madrid's reluctance to sell Julián Álvarez to Barcelona may open a door for the Gunners.

Arsenal are reassessing their pursuit of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães after being blindsided by the true cost of a deal, with the Magpies demanding a fee in the region of £130m paid in full and without add-on clauses.

Mikel Arteta’s side had been led to believe by intermediaries — including those in contact with former Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley — that a deal for the Brazilian could be done for around £50m. Arsenal’s best offer to date has reportedly been worth approximately £60m, a figure Newcastle have firmly rejected.

Guimarães, 28, has two years remaining on his contract at St. James’ Park, with an option for a further year, meaning the club are under no financial pressure to sell. The benchmark for their valuation appears to have been set by Sandro Tonali’s £100m move to Tottenham earlier this summer, with Newcastle now seeking a comparable or greater sum for their captain.

Arteta is said to remain an admirer of the Brazil international and still wants to strengthen his midfield following Arsenal’s first Premier League title. However, the revised price tag has prompted a significant rethink over whether Guimarães represents viable business this window.

On a more encouraging note for Arsenal, reports indicate that Atlético Madrid are keen to sell Julián Álvarez to any club other than Barcelona. That reluctance to deal with their La Liga rivals could work in Arsenal’s favour as they explore alternatives in the transfer market, with several of their targets still involved in the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The conclusion of the tournament this weekend is expected to accelerate transfer activity significantly, with clubs now able to open direct negotiations with players who have been unavailable throughout the summer.
