Arsenal have made Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers their primary transfer target for the summer window, with Villa’s precarious financial situation potentially forcing the club’s hand into selling one of their most prized assets.

According to The Athletic, Rogers sits at the top of Arsenal’s wishlist as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen a midfield that was stretched thin last season. Villa, meanwhile, have entered into a settlement agreement with UEFA after exceeding their permitted loss limit — a situation that could result in a ban from European competition if the terms are not met. Selling Rogers would provide a significant financial buffer and help the club remain compliant.

While Villa’s preference is to keep Rogers in their squad for next season, the financial reality may leave them with little choice. The England international is valued at more than the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson this summer, meaning a sale would represent a transformative windfall for the Birmingham club.

Arsenal’s need in central midfield is well-documented. An over-reliance on Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi last season, compounded by injuries to Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard, exposed the squad’s lack of depth. Arteta’s reluctance to deploy fringe options such as Christian Norgaard has made it clear that at least one high-quality addition is required if the Gunners are to defend their Premier League title and compete on multiple fronts.

Rogers is not the only name on Arsenal’s radar. The club are also monitoring Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, though he would cost north of £100m. Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães has also attracted interest, but the Magpies have indicated he is unavailable this summer following the sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal have already moved to address their goalkeeping options, securing a free-agent deal for Illan Meslier ahead of the new campaign.
