Arsenal plot January loan for Alvarez after £128m summer bid failed

Arsenal are plotting a January loan move for Julián Álvarez after failing to secure the £128 million-rated Atlético Madrid forward in the summer transfer window, according to Spanish media reports cited by The Standard.

The Argentina international had been keen to leave Atlético during the summer but favoured a move to Barcelona over Arsenal. Diego Simeone’s side refused to sanction a transfer to their La Liga rivals at any price, leaving Álvarez without his desired exit. With the 25-year-old since relegated to a bench role at Atlético, a temporary loan arrangement is said to be a realistic option when the January window opens.

Arsenal’s interest in fresh attacking reinforcements comes after a difficult start to the Premier League season. The Gunners were beaten 3-0 by Brighton at the Amex Stadium in their most recent domestic outing, a result that leaves Mikel Arteta’s side with work to do when league action resumes following the international break. Their next fixture sees Leeds visit the Emirates Stadium in mid-October, before trips to Bayern Munich and Liverpool add further pressure in the weeks that follow.

On the international front, England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley has called for measured handling of Arsenal teenager Max Dowman. The 16-year-old winger has been called into the England Under-19 setup this month after making ten appearances at that level, contributing seven goals and assists.

Carsley acknowledged Dowman’s exceptional ability but stressed the importance of timing his progression carefully. “He’s definitely an outstanding talent,” the coach said. “It’s inevitable that he’s going to be with the Under-21s because of his talent. But we have to make sure we do that at the right time, that he comes away with us and plays minutes and competes with the other players that are in his position.”

Carsley drew a parallel with Ethan Nwaneri’s development, noting the risks of accelerating a young player’s path through the age groups too quickly. “We have to be patient and make sure that ultimately we want them to play for the senior team for a prolonged period,” he added.
