Arsenal in £50m talks for Lyon's Fofana as Arteta scrambles to fill left-flank void

Arsenal are in talks to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana for around £50m before Tuesday’s 11pm transfer deadline, with the 21-year-old Belgium international having been offered to the Gunners by the French club. Sporting director Andrea Berta is working to finalise the deal as Arsenal’s final piece of summer business.

The move is driven by a pressing need for left-flank cover following a significant overhaul of Arsenal’s attacking options. Gabriel Martinelli is set to join Al Hilal in a deal worth approximately £60m, Gabriel Jesus moves to Barcelona for £8.6m plus £4.3m in add-ons, Fabio Vieira heads to Hamburger SV for £7.7m, and Leandro Trossard has also departed the Emirates. The departures have left Mikel Arteta with limited options wide on the left, with Christos Tzolis currently the primary option in that position.

Arsenal are keen to avoid a scenario in which Eberechi Eze becomes the default fallback should the Fofana deal collapse. Talks with the player’s representatives are ongoing, though Lyon’s £50m valuation means an agreement is not yet secured.

The club explored other avenues before turning to Fofana. Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola attracted admiration, but a price tag in excess of £120m was never a realistic proposition. Arsenal also made approaches for Jeremy Monga, another highly-regarded target, only to baulk at the asking price — a fee Manchester City had no hesitation in meeting.

Attempts to bring in Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez have also proved unsuccessful so far, adding further urgency to the Fofana pursuit.

Berta is under scrutiny for Arsenal’s failure to secure a genuine upgrade on the left wing during the window, and landing Fofana before the deadline would represent the fourth piece of outgoing-and-incoming business he has overseen in the final days of the summer.

Arteta addressed Arsenal’s transfer approach in a recent press conference, defending the club’s self-sustaining model while insisting that does not mean accepting sales on unfavourable terms. “There are areas that we have to improve to hit those numbers,” he said. “And if it’s not with sales, because maybe we don’t want — we have to sell what we want to sell as well, not just to sell.”

With the deadline hours away, whether Fofana arrives before the window closes will go a long way to defining how Arsenal’s summer recruitment is judged.
