Arias header sends Colombia into World Cup last-16 with narrow win over Ghana
Jhon Arias swept in the only goal from a Luis Suarez cross as Colombia edged Ghana 1-0 in Kansas City, completing the round-of-16 line-up. Colombia will face Switzerland in Vancouver.
Colombia secured a 1-0 victory over Ghana at Kansas City to advance to the World Cup round of 16, with Jhon Arias scoring the decisive goal from a cross delivered by substitute Luis Suarez, sweeping his shot in from the far post.
The South Americans were the more threatening side throughout, with Luis Diaz a constant danger on the left flank. Diaz fired wide when unmarked inside the box before the break, and Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi produced an excellent save to turn away Johan Mojica’s header as Colombia pressed for a second. Diaz also had a goal ruled out for offside after turning in at the far post, with Ati Zigi denying him again moments later in a sweeping move.
Ghana found some rhythm as Antoine Semenyo grew into the game, and the introduction of Alidu Seidu at right-back gave them more defensive solidity, but they never truly threatened to equalise. Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz was candid in his assessment of his side’s performance, pointing to a lack of composure under pressure.
“I felt really quickly that some of the Ghanaian players were fearful,” Queiroz said. “They were not cool, calm, and collected when the pressure hit. It’s a very young team. We need more experience, we need time for some players to win what we call maturity. When you play this kind of competition at this level, you cannot only count on the enthusiasm of the youths. The goal came too early for us.”
Despite the win, Colombia’s Bayern Munich forward Diaz was measured in his reaction, refusing to read too much into the performance. “We have won absolutely nothing,” he said. “The good thing and the positive thing is that we’re playing very well, we feel comfortable, we are being a family, we are working as a team and that will work for what is coming.”
Colombia will now travel to Vancouver to face Switzerland in the round of 16.
