A video presented as FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s reaction after Egypt’s goal in the World Cup Round of 16 against Argentina (3-2) is circulating widely on social media. It is false.

The images, stamped with the logo of Moroccan media outlet Le360, show the FIFA president clapping his hands in dismay in the stands while other people jump with joy around him. The comment accompanying the video associates it with one of Egypt’s two goals against Argentina. In reality, the scene was captured during the Round of 16 between Morocco and the Netherlands. You can also see the president of the Dutch football federation to the left of Infantino.

This is not the only fake circulating around this match. An image showing Infantino in distress after Lionel Messi’s missed penalty against Egypt was also shared as such, when it actually dates from Argentina’s previous match against Cape Verde.

These manipulations come in a tense context: every Argentina match fuels accusations of refereeing bias in favor of Messi and his team, and the 3-2 victory against Egypt was no exception. The rapid spread of this content illustrates how quickly misinformation spreads during major tournaments, where emotion often takes precedence over verification.
