Antonelli leads 2026 championship by 59 points and credits rookie struggles for mental edge

Andrea Kimi Antonelli heads into the Italian Grand Prix at Monza as the 2026 Formula 1 championship leader, holding a 59-point advantage over Mercedes team-mate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton after six victories this season. The 20-year-old Italian has attributed his remarkable second-season surge directly to the hardships he endured as a rookie in 2025.

Antonelli became the youngest driver to lead the championship in their second F1 season following back-to-back wins in China and Japan, a run he extended with four further grand prix victories before the summer break. The contrast with 2025 is stark: this time last year he had scored points in only two of nine European races, eventually finishing seventh in the standings with 150 points, three podiums and four retirements.

“Experience is playing a massive role,” Antonelli told F1.com. “Last year, despite all the bad moments, the difficult periods, I think that was what I needed because that helped me to grow even more than what I anticipated. It made me stronger emotionally and mentally.”

The question of when the pressure of a championship fight might weigh on such a young driver has been a recurring theme in the paddock since he took the standings lead in Japan, yet there has been little visible sign of it affecting his performances.

Antonelli will carry a power unit penalty into the Monza weekend, which runs from 4–6 September, adding a layer of complexity to what is already an emotionally charged home race. Whether the grid drop disrupts his title charge or he manages to limit the damage will be one of the defining storylines of the Italian Grand Prix.
