Julian Alvarez was loudly jeered by Atletico Madrid’s home supporters as he came off the bench in their 2-2 La Liga draw with Villarreal on Sunday, with the friction between the Argentine forward and the club now playing out in full view of the Metropolitano crowd.

The 26-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League champions Arsenal as well as Barcelona, was named among the substitutes for Atletico’s first home fixture of the season. His appearance in the 66th minute was greeted with deafening whistles — a reception that had already begun during his pre-match warm-up.

The atmosphere only worsened at full-time. While his team-mates stayed on the pitch to acknowledge the fans, Alvarez walked straight down the tunnel to a further round of jeers, a gesture that underlined the depth of the rift between player and supporters.

Atletico have maintained publicly that Alvarez is not for sale, but the player has made clear his desire to leave the Spanish capital this summer, creating a stand-off that is now visibly affecting the mood inside the stadium.

On the pitch, Alvarez was introduced after Villarreal had levelled through a Gerard Moreno penalty, which cancelled out Marc Pubill’s opener. A second spot-kick, converted by Georges Mikautadze, put the visitors in front before Giuliano Simeone — Alvarez’s compatriot and the son of manager Diego Simeone — rescued a point for Atletico five minutes from time.

The draw leaves Atletico’s summer transfer situation unresolved, with the club insisting on their valuation while Arsenal’s interest continues to apply pressure from outside.
