Alex Mitchell faces season-ending hamstring injury, dealing Northampton a major blow

Northampton Saints scrum-half Alex Mitchell is set to miss the rest of the season after tearing his hamstring at an England alignment camp last week — his second similar injury in under three months. Director of rugby Phil Dowson confirmed the scan results are bleak and called for a full investigation.

Alex Mitchell is facing a premature end to his season after suffering a significant hamstring injury at an England alignment camp, Northampton Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson confirmed. The setback arrives less than three months after the England and Lions scrum-half picked up a comparable injury during the Six Nations defeat to Ireland in February.

Mitchell had made five appearances for Saints following his return from that earlier problem, but Dowson said the latest scan results leave little hope of the 27-year-old featuring again before the end of the campaign — a major blow with Northampton chasing the Gallagher Premiership title next month.

“He’s pulled it, and he’s done a decent job on it,” Dowson said. “Matt Lee sent me the picture, so it’s going to be a push to get him any rugby for us for the rest of the season. It is frustrating.”

Dowson was measured in his response to questions about whether the England alignment camp — held close to the end of a long domestic season — was appropriate timing, stopping short of blaming the national set-up while acknowledging that conversations need to be had.

“I’m not gonna start casting aspersions until I’ve spoken to Phil Morrow and the rest of their medical team,” he said. “I don’t think it was a ludicrous session in terms of volume. It’s unfortunate, and maybe there are things we can do better.”

The fact that Mitchell has now damaged both hamstrings within such a short window has prompted Northampton’s medical staff to begin a wider investigation into his training load and physical preparation.

“I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a worry as yet, but you’ve got to make sure this doesn’t become a pattern,” Dowson said. “We will look at ourselves first — how we’re training and how he’s training — to make sure we’re giving him the best chance.”

Dowson also indicated that the timing of England’s alignment camps is likely to become a talking point among Premiership directors of rugby, with several clubs having rested players during the same window that Mitchell was called up for national duty.

“It would be good to have some conversations around that — with England — and say, how do we mitigate the risk? What does the training look like? Did he get the training that he wanted? Where are the metrics?”

Mitchell had been one of the standout performers in the Premiership this season and was widely expected to play a central role in Saints’ title push, as well as featuring in the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia this summer.
