17-year-old Charlie Holt becomes first City player to leave after 114-charge guilty verdict
Cardiff City have signed Manchester City Under-18 midfielder Charlie Holt, making him the first player to depart the Etihad since City were found guilty of 114 financial breaches last week. The 17-year-old joins Cardiff's Under-21 setup after one season at City.
Charlie Holt has become the first Manchester City player to leave the club following last week’s guilty verdict on 114 of 115 Premier League financial breach charges, with Cardiff City confirming the 17-year-old midfielder’s signing from the Etihad Stadium.
Holt, who signed a scholarship deal with City in the summer of 2025, made 12 appearances for the club’s Under-18s last season, contributing to their Premier League North title win. He will link up with Cardiff’s Under-21 squad rather than the first team.
The departure comes amid significant uncertainty at Manchester City. The club were found guilty of 114 financial breaches brought forward by the Premier League and have since confirmed they are appealing the verdict, claiming to hold a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” that should clear them of any wrongdoing. An independent three-person panel is expected to hear the appeal and deliver a decision before the end of the year.
Potential punishments discussed in the days since the verdict include points deductions, fines, the stripping of past trophies, and expulsion from the Premier League, though no sanctions have yet been imposed while the appeal process is ongoing.
For Holt, the move represents a fresh start and a step up in competitive environment. “I’m very pleased to be here. It’s a great opportunity and a different challenge for me,” the midfielder said on Cardiff’s club website. “It’s a brilliant environment to be in and I can’t wait to get started. I’d say I’m an energetic player with technical ability on the ball. Hopefully, I can chip in with a few goals as well. The opportunities that you can get here at Cardiff City are clear to see. It’s a great place to be.”
While Holt’s exit is a minor footnote in footballing terms, it marks the beginning of a potentially turbulent period of player movement at City as the club navigates the consequences of the most significant verdict in Premier League history.
