15-year-old JJ Gabriel flies to Barcelona as Man Utd reject his de-registration request

Manchester United are fighting to keep academy prodigy JJ Gabriel after the 15-year-old formally requested his youth de-registration on 15 September and subsequently flew to Barcelona to hold talks with the Spanish giants.

The request sent shockwaves through Old Trafford, arriving the day before United faced Brighton in the Carabao Cup — a tie they lost 3-2 — with Gabriel, who could have become the club’s youngest-ever first-team player, omitted from the squad entirely. He has not trained with the club since.

Why de-registration, not a transfer?

Because Gabriel turns 16 on 6 October, he is not yet eligible to sign a scholarship agreement, let alone a professional contract. The only instrument currently binding him to United is a Premier League youth registration, and cancelling it requires the consent of all parties: the club, the player, and his parent or guardian. United refused, meaning Gabriel remains on the academy’s books for now — but that may not be the end of the matter.

Reports indicate that Gabriel’s frustration centres on what he and his camp regard as broken promises over senior involvement. It is not the first time United have had to fight to keep him: in 2025, executive director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada were forced to intervene personally to prevent him from crossing Manchester to join City.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and an EU passport

Despite United’s refusal, Gabriel has made his intentions plain. He is understood to have first travelled to France before flying on to Spain, where meetings with Barcelona were concluded. Real Madrid and other major European clubs are also said to be monitoring the situation closely.

Crucially, Gabriel may have a legal route out even without United’s agreement. Through his father — a former Republic of Ireland international — or his mother, who has Greek-Cypriot heritage, he is eligible for an EU passport. Once he turns 16, he could decline United’s scholarship offer and, under EU regulations governing the movement of young players, potentially move to a club on the continent.

United’s position

The club publicly maintain that the situation can be repaired and that they remain committed to keeping one of English football’s most talked-about teenage talents. Former United midfielder Michael Carrick has also commented on the case, though the precise nature of his remarks was not detailed in early reports.

With Gabriel’s 16th birthday days away, United’s window to resolve the dispute — on their terms — is narrowing fast.
