10-man Spurs deny United as Carrick faces calls to scrap Mainoo-Tielemans pivot
Manchester United's worst league start in 40 years deepened on Saturday as Dominic Solanke's late equaliser earned 10-man Tottenham a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, prompting Gary Neville to demand midfield changes ahead of Tuesday's Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid.
Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time equaliser condemned Manchester United to a 1-1 draw against 10-man Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday, extending what is now the club’s worst start to a league campaign in 40 years.
The result left manager Michael Carrick under immediate pressure heading into Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid in Spain, with the international break having done little to arrest United’s early-season slide.
Neville demands midfield overhaul
Former United captain Gary Neville was among the most vocal critics after the Spurs draw, calling for Carrick to abandon the central midfield partnership of Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans. Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, Neville said the team is “not running enough, they’re not showing enough tenacity, determination and fighting spirit,” adding that the boos from the Old Trafford crowd reflected genuine despondency.
“Tielemans and Mainoo, I think we’ve seen enough of it now,” Neville said. “Not calling time on it, that’s probably too drastic. But I’ve seen enough of it to think, ‘That’s not dynamic enough to play at this football club in the Premier League. They’re both good players, by the way. But sometimes they don’t knit together or suit together — when Baleba came on that looked like a lot more energy.”
The statistics from Saturday support Neville’s concern. Mainoo surrendered possession five times — more than any other player on the pitch — while Tielemans managed just 81 per cent pass completion in an error-prone afternoon.
Carlos Baleba, who made his club debut as a substitute against Spurs having recovered from injury, is now being considered for a more prominent role. Fellow summer signing Andrey Santos remained unused on the bench alongside Mason Mount.
JJ Gabriel future unresolved
Off the pitch, the future of JJ Gabriel remains uncertain as the January transfer window approaches. Bayern Munich have reportedly held discussions over a potential move for the player, but no formal offer has yet been submitted, according to Sky Sport Germany. Gabriel’s camp is said to be encouraged by Bayern’s interest, though the situation remains unresolved with the window still weeks away.
