Patrice Evra reveals Ronaldo nearly signed for PSG before choosing Juventus
In summer 2018, after leaving Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo seriously considered joining Paris Saint-Germain. His former Manchester United teammate Patrice Evra has now confirmed this.
Cristiano Ronaldo came close to becoming a PSG player in summer 2018. According to Patrice Evra, his former Manchester United teammate, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had placed PSG on his shortlist before ultimately opting for Juventus.
“Did Cristiano ever want to come to PSG? Yes. It was before he signed for Juventus. He had Chelsea, Juventus and Paris. He said he would never go to Arsenal. And he was interested in the Paris project,” Evra said.
The context was that of a Ronaldo at the peak of his Real Madrid legend: on May 26, 2018, he had just lifted his fifth Ligue des Champions with Real Madrid before announcing his departure at age 33. On the other side, PSG with Neymar and Kylian Mbappé was looking to pull off another major coup on the European transfer market.
Discussions had indeed taken place between Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo’s agent, and Nasser al-Khelaïfi, the PSG president. They came to nothing. The Portuguese player preferred Serie A and Juventus, leaving PSG without the third star it coveted.
The capital club would have to wait until 2021 to complete a comparable signing, attracting Lionel Messi following his forced departure from FC Barcelona. An operation that, in turn, would not live up to all its sporting promises.
