World Cup standout Gill confirms £5.2m release clause as Man United eye goalkeeper deal
Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who starred against Germany and France at the 2026 World Cup, has confirmed he has a release clause in his San Lorenzo contract as Manchester United, Aston Villa and Ipswich Town monitor his situation.
Orlando Gill has confirmed the existence of a £5.2m release clause in his San Lorenzo contract, opening the door to a potential summer move after his breakout performances at the 2026 World Cup attracted interest from Manchester United, Aston Villa and Ipswich Town.
The 26-year-old Paraguayan goalkeeper was named Player of the Match in back-to-back knockout games against Germany and France, with his penalty shootout heroics — saving efforts from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade — helping La Albirroja topple Die Mannschaft in one of the tournament’s defining upsets and advance to the Round of 16.
“I have a clause in my contract and I think it has to be respected,” Gill said upon returning to Paraguay following his nation’s World Cup exit. “Then it depends on the club. If it’s good for both parties, we’ll have to reached an agreement.”
Gill was measured about the reported interest, stopping short of confirming any formal approach. “I can’t say yes or no. They told me there is interest, but not a formal offer,” he said. “I don’t want to get carried away. We’ll sit down and speak with the club to see what is best.”
San Lorenzo, the Argentine club where Gill has kept 29 clean sheets in 59 appearances, are battling significant financial difficulties. Argentine newspaper Clarin reports the club’s debt is approaching 100 billion Argentine pesos — approximately £50m — and there is said to be an acceptance inside the club that preventing Gill’s departure could prove difficult. Manager Nestor Gorosito is reportedly already considering potential replacements.
Manchester United’s interest is driven by a goalkeeping reshuffle this summer, with three keepers expected to leave Old Trafford. The Manchester Evening News understands Michael Carrick’s side are seeking a goalkeeper to provide competition for Senne Lammens, making Gill a credible target at a fee that could look modest should his World Cup form carry into club football.
