Robert Whittaker has accepted the dangers that come with his permanent step up to light heavyweight, describing raw power as “the ultimate equaliser” in the division as he prepares to face Nikita Krylov at UFC 329 on Saturday, 11 July, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The former UFC middleweight champion, who arrives at 205 pounds on the back of back-to-back losses at middleweight, was candid about what the heavier division demands. “It doesn’t matter how technical you are; if you get hit hard by a heavy dude, it’s going to hurt,” Whittaker said in a recent interview. “So, I understand the risk and the threat. That is the danger of moving up to light heavyweight.”

Despite those concerns, the Australian insists his attributes are more than sufficient to compete at the top of the new weight class. “I believe my skill set is champion level,” he added. “The speed that I have, the physicality that I have, are at a champion level, and I am going to bring them.”

Whittaker’s opponent, Krylov, is a seasoned natural light heavyweight. The Ukrainian-born Russian is not particularly noted for his punching power, with his game built more around durability and grappling — a profile that may ease some of Whittaker’s stated concerns about absorbing heavy shots in his divisional debut.

The move represents a significant crossroads for Whittaker, who was once regarded as one of the finest middleweights on the planet. Having twice challenged for the middleweight title in recent years and come up short on both occasions, the 34-year-old is betting that the physical attributes he has developed — speed, timing, and technical precision — will carry greater weight at 205 pounds than they did in his final middleweight outings.

How quickly those qualities translate against a proven light heavyweight will become clear when Whittaker and Krylov meet at UFC 329.
