Wade one try from PREM all-time record as contract future hangs in the balance
Christian Wade, 35, needs just one more try to surpass Chris Ashton as the Gallagher Premiership's all-time leading scorer. The Newcastle Red Bulls wing is also fighting to secure a deal beyond this season.
Christian Wade stands one try away from becoming the Gallagher Premiership’s all-time leading scorer, but the 35-year-old is acutely aware that his performance against Sale Sharks at Kingston Park carries even greater personal stakes — his contract future at Newcastle Red Bulls beyond this season remains unresolved.
Wade reached the landmark of 100 Premiership tries with a hat-trick against Exeter Chiefs two weeks ago, pulling level with the century mark and leaving him just one behind Chris Ashton’s all-time record. Saturday’s home fixture against Sale presents the clearest opportunity yet to rewrite the history books.
Yet Wade is candid about the dual pressure he is carrying. Despite his try-scoring feats, he acknowledges that output alone may not be sufficient to earn a new deal. “Obviously, I would love to stay on, but I’m not sure what the plans are going forward,” he said. “I’m going to keep doing what I do and see what happens.”
The former Wasps, Racing 92, Gloucester and Wigan Warriors back — who also spent time in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and holds one England cap — says the experience in American football fundamentally sharpened his professional outlook. “Ever since going to America, it just accentuated the fact more that you have to earn your place every day,” he explained. “In the NFL, you’re seeing guys come in and out, week to week, trying out for the team. You realise that this session could be your last.”
Wade was drawn to Newcastle partly by the ambition surrounding the club’s Red Bull ownership and its incoming coaching staff, and he is open about wanting to put down roots after a career built largely on successive one-year contracts. “I’ve only ever been at a club for about a year. Hopefully, I’ve found somewhere where I can really stick around and bring my experience,” he said.
On the record itself, Wade is measured. “A lot of people think that I came back to try and break the record, but I’m all about making the most of the gifts that God has given me,” he said. “Even post getting the record and post this season, I want to keep playing until I feel like I don’t have the juice anymore.”
