Urdapilleta breaks Top 14 all-time points record at 40 despite Perpignan's heavy defeat
Benjamín Urdapilleta rewrote Top 14 history on Saturday, surpassing Romain Teulet's professional-era points record during Perpignan's 55-25 loss to Racing 92. The twice-retired Argentine fly-half now stands alone on 2,619 points in the French top flight.
Benjamín Urdapilleta became the all-time leading points scorer in Top 14 history on Saturday, overtaking Romain Teulet’s professional-era record during USA Perpignan’s 55-25 defeat to Racing 92. The 40-year-old Argentine fly-half finished the afternoon on 2,619 points, having entered the match just two behind Teulet’s mark.
Urdapilleta first drew level by converting Braydon Ennor’s try, then pulled clear with two successful penalty kicks to set the new benchmark. The milestone arrived in a heavy loss for Perpignan, but the occasion was not lost on the club or its supporters, with the veteran cementing his place in French rugby history.
The fly-half’s journey to the record has spanned more than a decade in France. After beginning his senior career in Argentina with CUBA and a brief spell at Harlequins in England from 2010, he moved to France in 2012, first making his name at US Oyonnax — where he helped the club win promotion from Pro D2 and scored over 700 points — before joining Castres in 2015.
It was at Castres that Urdapilleta enjoyed his finest moments. He was central to the club’s Top 14 title win in 2018, ending a five-year drought, and was named Player of the Match in the final against Montpellier, contributing 19 points from the tee and setting up Julien Dumora’s try. His 2020-21 campaign was his most prolific individually, yielding 321 points in a single season despite Castres missing the playoffs.
After eight years at Castres, he moved to Clermont in 2023 for two seasons before signing with Perpignan in 2025, where he has been a key figure in the club’s battle against relegation.
Saturday’s record is not the only landmark Urdapilleta holds in the Top 14. He also owns the record for the most points scored in a single match — 33 — set against Montpellier on 13 February 2021, a mark that underlines just how consistently destructive he has been from the kicking tee throughout his French career.
