URC moves team-announcement deadline to Thursday in bid to boost league profile

The United Rugby Championship has announced it will bring forward its team-announcement deadline to 2pm on Thursdays, starting with the 2026/27 season, in a trial designed to generate greater media coverage and help clubs sell tickets ahead of matchdays.

The change carries extra resonance given the fierce debate that surrounded team announcements during the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Series (RGRS) between South Africa and New Zealand earlier this year. Because the RGRS was neither a World Rugby-run competition nor overseen by SANZAAR, it fell outside the standard Test-match protocol requiring squads to be named at least 48 hours before kick-off, with changes permitted only for injury.

Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus exploited that freedom to striking effect. Ahead of the second Test in Cape Town, he named his side on Monday as usual but then made a series of alterations throughout the week, right up to an hour before kick-off. Citing a change in weather conditions, he overhauled his entire front row, dropping Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw to the bench and handing starts to Gerhard Steenekamp, Deon Fourie and Thomas du Toit.

The week before, Erasmus had delayed his announcement by three days, framing it as a gesture of respect toward the All Blacks. “It’s out of respect for New Zealand, knowing how tough this one is going to be. For this one especially, the less time they have to prepare for our team, the better,” he said at the time.

The URC’s motivation is more commercial than tactical. League bosses hope the earlier Thursday window will give media partners more time to build storylines around fixtures and create momentum in the days leading up to games, while also supporting clubs in driving ticket sales.

The 2026/27 URC season kicks off on Friday, 25 September, with opening-round fixtures between Connacht and Stormers, Benetton and Dragons, and Ulster and Edinburgh. Champions Leinster begin their title defence the following day in Johannesburg against the Lions, one of five matches scheduled for Saturday. The round concludes with the Sharks hosting the Ospreys, Munster welcoming Glasgow in what shapes up as the standout tie, Zebre facing the Bulls, and an all-Welsh derby between Scarlets and Cardiff.
