United approach Nagelsmann as Carrick's position hangs by a thread after 4-1 Como humiliation
Manchester United have made an approach to Julian Nagelsmann about replacing Michael Carrick, whose position is under severe threat after a 4-1 Champions League defeat to debutants Como left the club winless in seven matches.
Manchester United have approached Julian Nagelsmann about taking over as manager, with Michael Carrick facing the sack after Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como — the Italian side’s first-ever appearance in the competition — extended the club’s winless run to seven matches in all competitions.
United have won just twice across the Premier League and Champions League this season, and the scale of the Como loss has accelerated the club’s search for a replacement. According to talkSPORT, Nagelsmann has emerged as the leading candidate. The 39-year-old is available after stepping down as Germany manager and is reported to be open to taking the role. He previously worked with United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, at RB Leipzig and is said to have existing admirers within the club — having featured in their thinking before Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis. Nagelsmann also speaks fluent English.
Sunday’s home Premier League fixture against Bournemouth is being viewed as potentially decisive for Carrick’s future. Although talkSPORT reported he did not arrive at Carrington at his usual 7.30am on Thursday, he is still expected to take charge of the match.
Carrick did not hide his frustration after the Como defeat. “I’m bitterly disappointed,” he said. “I’m frustrated, more than frustrated, I’m really angry to be honest. You’ve got to move on and think about what’s next. For us to play in that way is not acceptable, it wasn’t a good performance at all.”
Captain Bruno Fernandes added to the pressure on the coaching staff by publicly questioning the decision not to employ a man-to-man press during the defeat.
Beyond Nagelsmann, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is also reportedly high on United’s shortlist, though his recently signed long-term contract could result in a significant compensation bill. Antonio Conte, who left Napoli in the summer, and former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe — currently a free agent — are also said to be under consideration. Howe was previously favoured by former United sporting director Dan Ashworth, though minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly opposed that move.
