UFC releases Topuria documentary ahead of Gaethje lightweight unification bout

The UFC has announced a documentary on Ilia Topuria set to release on June 1, two weeks before the Georgian-Spanish champion headlines the UFC White House event against Justin Gaethje on June 14 in a lightweight title unification bout.

Titled Topuria Matador, the film centres on two pivotal fights in Topuria’s career. It begins with his July 2023 contest against Josh Emmett — only the second time Topuria had gone the full distance as a professional — before building toward his February 2024 featherweight title victory over Alexander Volkanovski, which he secured by knockout.

Beyond the fights themselves, the documentary explores Topuria’s background. Born in Germany to Georgian parents, he relocated with his family — including brother and fellow fighter Aleksandre Topuria — first to Georgia and then to Spain, where the family continues to live and train. The film will examine his training sessions, weight cuts, and input from his coaching team, while also featuring commentary from opponents who have faced him.

Topuria remains undefeated as a professional and stands among a small group of two-division UFC champions. After stopping Volkanovski for the featherweight belt, he defended it by defeating Max Holloway before moving up to lightweight and claiming the vacant 155-pound title with a win over Charles Oliveira. His upcoming clash with Gaethje will unify his championship with the interim lightweight strap Gaethje currently holds.

The June 14 card, set at the White House, is shaping up to be one of the most high-profile events in UFC history. The documentary release is timed to build momentum heading into what the promotion has positioned as a landmark show.
