UFC employee Sal Everett earns fight contract after knockout on Contender Series
Sal Everett, who works as Dana White's personal runner at UFC headquarters, knocked out Ozzy Martin during Week 9 of Contender Series to earn a UFC contract — becoming the first UFC employee to compete and sign with the promotion.
Sal Everett walked into Tuesday night’s Contender Series as Dana White’s personal runner at UFC headquarters and walked out with a UFC contract. The undefeated fighter, who previously worked security for the promotion before becoming White’s day-to-day assistant, stopped Ozzy Martin by knockout in Week 9 of the series, making history as the first UFC employee to compete on Contender Series and the first to earn an active UFC deal.
White, speaking to reporters at his post-show media scrum, made clear he expects Everett’s office days to be behind him. “I think this contract changes his life to where he doesn’t have to work at the office,” White said. “I think that when we run into Sal now, it will be at the P.I. training. I think if he’s gonna really do this and take a run, now he’s got a contract that actually pays him enough money to make a living and support his family, then he needs to take this serious and go.”
Everett has said he wants to keep his day job within the UFC, though whether that will be permitted remains uncertain. The arrangement has already drawn scrutiny — some questioned whether a fighter with a 4-0 record should have received a Contender Series slot at all. White dismissed those concerns directly. “People are gonna talk shit no matter what,” he said. “That’s the last thing Sal needs to worry about. He went in there and earned that tonight.”
White also pushed back on any suggestion that Everett leveraged personal connections to secure the opportunity. “It’s not like he was running around the office trying to use his relationships to get here,” White said. “I was the one that pushed Contender Series.” He recalled telling Everett — while the fighter was stocking his office fridge — that he had been speaking with matchmakers Sean Shelby, Mick Maynard, and Hunter Campbell about getting him on an episode. Everett’s response, according to White: “I’m ready when you are.”
Even UFC matchmaker Shelby had flagged the bout as a genuine contest beforehand. “Sean was like, ‘Just letting you know, he’s in a f*cking fight! This is easily 50/50,’” White recounted. “And all my Boston guys were blowing me up that know the kid saying he’s a tough kid. Sal earned it.”
White was effusive about Everett’s standing among UFC staff. “There isn’t one person at the headquarters that doesn’t like Sal,” he said. “Hard worker, always positive attitude. He earned his way here, and that’s one of the many things that people respect about him.”
“It’s an unbelievable story,” White added.
