UEFA rules force Ngumoha out of England's 23-man squad to face Spain at Wembley

Rio Ngumoha has been left out of England’s finalised 23-man squad for tonight’s Nations League clash against Spain at Wembley, with UEFA rules forcing Thomas Tuchel to drop one player from his 24-man training group. UEFA confirmed the updated list on Friday morning, with the 18-year-old Liverpool winger the player omitted.

Ngumoha had been one of the standout names of the camp after earning his senior debut during England’s pre-World Cup warm-up friendlies in Florida, a performance impressive enough to see him retained for the Nations League campaign. All 24 players trained together on Thursday, making the cut an administrative necessity rather than a reflection of form.

The teenager had spoken confidently about his ambitions earlier in the week. “I’d say I’m fearless,” Ngumoha told talkSPORT. “I like to take on players, whether it’s one-v-ones, sometimes two-v-ones as well. But also, I want to help the team out with goals and assists because at the end of the day, it’s not just about me and the team.”

He also praised Tuchel’s role in his rapid rise. “He’s really helpful, and I think him picking me shows his belief in me and how exciting and explosive he thinks I am. All I can do now is just show him again why I should be here for the many more camps.”

Despite missing out on the Spain fixture, Ngumoha is expected to feature during England’s four-game run in ten days, with Tuchel making clear he intends to rotate his squad throughout. The head coach confirmed on Friday that Harry Kane is eager to start all four matches and may be given the opportunity, but acknowledged that most players will not complete the full run.

“Maybe not all of them,” Tuchel said when asked if any player could feature in every game. “We will use our substitutes. Harry is desperate to start all four and there is a chance he will. We have six or seven positions with regular starters but we must look at the reality.”

Tuchel also outlined his thinking on managing minutes, noting that the difference between 70 and 90 minutes on the pitch is significant from a physical standpoint. With trips to the Czech Republic and beyond to follow, Ngumoha’s chance is likely to come before the international window closes.
