Tuchel dismisses Viagra altitude claims as England prepare for Mexico City test
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has played down reports that his players could use Viagra to cope with the altitude at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium, ahead of Monday's World Cup clash with Mexico at 2,200 metres above sea level.
Thomas Tuchel has rejected suggestions that England would use Viagra to counter the altitude challenges at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where the Three Lions face co-hosts Mexico on Monday in a World Cup knockout tie.
The drug, originally developed as a high blood pressure remedy, widens blood vessels in the lungs by blocking an enzyme that restricts them — a mechanism that can ease the physiological strain of competing at altitude. At 2,200 metres above sea level, thinner air means less oxygen per breath, raising heart rate and breathing rates while accelerating fatigue and dehydration.
Reports had suggested England players could legally take the drug, given that sildenafil — the active compound in Viagra — does not appear on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of prohibited substances. Tuchel, however, was unequivocal when asked about the claims. “The information and the support didn’t reach me,” he said. “That is not true.”
England veteran Jordan Henderson offered a lighter take on the altitude discussion. “Well, the Viagra helps… I’m joking, it’s a joke,” the 36-year-old said, drawing a laugh from the room.
The stakes are considerable. The winner of Monday’s match advances to a quarter-final against either Brazil or Norway. England enter as clear favourites on paper, but Mexico arrive having not conceded a single goal across their four matches in the tournament, and will be backed by a sell-out home crowd at the iconic Azteca.
