Tsarukyan destroys Ruffy with double elbow in round one to demand UFC lightweight title shot

Arman Tsarukyan made an emphatic case for a UFC lightweight title shot at UFC 331 in Los Angeles on Saturday, knocking out Mauricio Ruffy with a pair of crushing elbows at 4:56 of the opening round. Referee Jason Herzog waved off the contest as Ruffy collapsed to the canvas unconscious, handing Tsarukyan one of the most striking finishes of his career.

The fight began with Ruffy landing a well-timed straight right that briefly set the tone, prompting Tsarukyan to attempt a single-leg takedown and work a body lock against the cage. Ruffy defended the grappling well, but Tsarukyan found his opening in close quarters — a short inside elbow landed clean, and a second shot moments later rendered Ruffy unconscious before he had time to recover.

Tsarukyan immediately scaled the cage to celebrate with UFC CEO Dana White, leaving little doubt about what he wants next.

“I came here to save this city,” Tsarukyan said in his post-fight interview. “Today, Los Angeles is going to have fun. I knew I was going to finish him. First elbow is from this coach, second elbow is from this coach.”

He added, with characteristic directness: “[It has to be] title fight or Mark Zuckerberg — I want to fight you next.”

The path to a title shot is complicated by timing. UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje has indicated he does not plan to compete again until 2027, while former champion Ilia Topuria has recently been cleared to return after recovering from his gruelling UFC White House bout. Neither fight is imminent, but Tsarukyan’s performance on Saturday makes him difficult to overlook in any conversation about the division’s next big matchup.
