Trabzonspor in daily contact with Onana as Heaton signs new United deal
Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has confirmed the Turkish club speak with Andre Onana every day as they pursue a permanent deal, while Manchester United have handed third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton a new one-year contract.
Trabzonspor are in daily contact with Andre Onana as the Turkish club push to sign the Manchester United goalkeeper permanently, while 40-year-old Tom Heaton has committed to a further year at Old Trafford.
Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan confirmed the ongoing dialogue, saying: “We speak with Onana every day. We won’t have any financial difficulties.” The Cameroonian spent the second half of the season on loan at the Turkish Super Lig side after losing his starting place to Altay Bayindir, and he helped Trabzonspor finish third behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce while also winning the Turkish Cup.
United paid Inter Milan an initial £43.8m for Onana and will need to accept a significant financial loss if they move him on this summer. Dogan acknowledged the deal is not yet done, adding: “We’ll make the necessary sacrifices. I don’t think we will experience any setbacks. But if we do, we will find another goalkeeper of the same quality.”
On the other end of the goalkeeping picture, Heaton has signed a one-year extension to remain at the club. The veteran, who has three England caps and came through United’s youth academy, has made just three first-team appearances since returning to Old Trafford for a second spell in 2021. He said: “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United. You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”
The goalkeeper news comes as new permanent manager Michael Carrick shapes his squad ahead of his first full season in charge. Carrick was confirmed as boss after guiding United to a third-place Premier League finish and a return to the Champions League. Midfielder Ederson is reported to be on the verge of joining from Atalanta, while Rasmus Hojlund has converted his loan at Roma into a permanent transfer. The future of Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, remains unresolved as the Spanish club weigh up whether to make his move permanent.
