Manchester United have handed veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton a one-year contract extension, keeping the 40-year-old at Old Trafford beyond the current season.

Heaton, who boasts three England caps, has made only three first-team appearances since rejoining the club in 2021 for his second spell, primarily serving as back-up to first-choice Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir.

“It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United,” Heaton said. “You can feel the determination and ambition of everyone throughout the club to keep pushing for success. I am really excited to play my role in driving us forward and helping the group to compete for the biggest honours.”

Director of football Jason Wilcox echoed that sentiment: “We are delighted that Tom is continuing for another year. Everyone is well aware of the importance of his leadership and professionalism within the group.”

Heaton originally came through United’s youth academy before leaving in 2010 following a series of loan moves. His career flourished at Burnley, where he made 200 appearances and was part of two promotion-winning sides that took the Clarets into the Premier League — in 2014 and again in 2016.

A move to Aston Villa preceded his return to Manchester, though his time there was disrupted by a serious injury in January 2020 that sidelined him for the best part of two seasons. His absence proved pivotal for Emi Martinez, who used the opportunity to establish himself as Villa’s undisputed first choice.

The extension comes at a time of uncertainty in United’s goalkeeping department. Bayindir has been linked with a departure, while the long-term future of Andre Onana — currently on loan at Trabzonspor — remains unresolved. Heaton’s renewal ensures the club retains an experienced presence in the position regardless of how those situations develop.
