Tielemans takes Scholes' No. 18 as Rashford's Barcelona return fades further
Youri Tielemans has chosen the iconic No. 18 shirt at Manchester United after completing his £35m move from Aston Villa, while Marcus Rashford's hopes of a permanent return to Barcelona have dimmed as the club pursues other targets.
Youri Tielemans has been handed the No. 18 shirt at Manchester United following his £35m arrival from Aston Villa, a number previously worn by Paul Scholes, Ashley Young, Bruno Fernandes, and most recently Casemiro. The Belgian midfielder is one of three signings United have confirmed this week under manager Michael Carrick.
Tielemans joins Andrey Santos, who moved from Chelsea for £50m, and backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who arrived on a free transfer from Leeds United, as the club accelerates its summer recruitment after a slow start to the window.
On his move, Tielemans said: “It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a special club feels incredible, it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football. I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
Carrick will be hoping Tielemans’ Premier League experience and deep-playmaking qualities can strengthen a midfield that has been a priority area for rebuilding.
Elsewhere, Marcus Rashford’s hopes of securing a permanent move to Barcelona appear to be fading. The forward spent last season on loan at the Catalan club, but Barcelona declined to trigger the £26m purchase option in his deal. They have since completed the £70m signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and are reportedly set to bring in Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund — both players who operate in Rashford’s position.
A potential exit for Ferran Torres had been seen as a route back for Rashford, but Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reports that Torres’ future will not be resolved until September due to FFP constraints. That timeline creates a difficult scenario for Rashford: either Torres signs a new contract and the door closes entirely, or any departure comes too late to meaningfully affect where the England international ends up this summer.
